Scare tactics like “a pacifier will ruin everything!!” are not actually helpful. Education about how to be mindful about pacifier use can help you navigate the newborn days with confidence!

Here is the WHY, newborns need to eat A LOT and that frequent feeding has an important role in helping to establish a good milk supply, if we use a pacifier when baby is trying to do their job of establishing milk supply it can lead to a lower milk supply and may mean baby isn't getting enough milk. Baby constantly wanting a pacifier and never being content without sucking might be a sign they aren't transfering milk well which is something that we need to address.

It often does not cause "nipple confusion" to use a pacifier and mindful pacifier use is FINE!! Watch closely at HOW baby is sucking on the pacifier, are they sucking very strongly, getting frustrated and not soothing easily - then they probably do need to eat more. If they are just casually sucking and drift into sleep, then they may have just needed to suck a little more.

Is it ok to use the pacifier for a few minutes while mom takes a break, goes to the bathroom or eats a snack even if it’s frantic sucking - sure! Maybe this is even an opportunity to pump and give a bottle so everyone can take a deep breath. We can help you navigate this!

If baby never seems satisfied after feeding, isn’t gaining well or always seems fussy we can help you get on a good plan!
